It never feels like work to me
Corinne Messenger has been volunteering with Dress for Success Wellington since September 2011. She currently supports FKM Trust's Shop for Success at the Underground Market, which helps fund Dress for Success Wellington. Corinne helps administer the stall as well as select and price up donated clothing and accessories.
With her executive assistant background, Corinne finds her natural organisational ability and people skills really help when it comes to running the market.
“I am very solutions–focused, and running the stall allows me the freedom to exercise my soft skills while at the same time advancing women and women’s causes.”
Corinne believes that while the stall has some great quality stock it, it’s not just about fashion for her - it’s so much more than that.
“It’s about having fun with other volunteers and with the image of who we are as women. A lot of women’s self-esteem is wrapped up in how we look. I believe that women should dress for themselves, and dress for their shape.”
Corinne also really likes the fact that with Dress for Success Wellington you can commit as much or as little time as you like, to volunteering.
“One of the main reasons I’m still volunteering with dress for success after three years, is that I have never once felt under pressure to overcommit. The stall is run by a great team of people who are conscious of the fact that most of the volunteers have busy paid jobs.
“The last thing you want is to feel like you are working Saturdays as well. But I always have so much fun at the market - it never feels like work to me.”
